Poems for the lost: Simon Armitage remembers WW1 – BBC ARTS SPECIAL

On this Remembrance Sunday Simon Armitage marks WW1

“The Great War – An Elegy: A Culture Show Special.

In a major new BBC commission, acclaimed poet Simon Armitage has written seven new poems about World War I that form the centre of his latest television documentary.

Armitage visits French beaches, German prison camps, so-called ‘thankful’ villages and remote corners of the Scottish Highlands as he considers the death of over 700,000 British soldiers in the conflict and tells seven real-life war stories. He learns of those who lived and died through it, those who worked and grieved and cried through it, and even those who tunnelled to freedom beneath its very soil. Each story culminates in a poem inspired by Armitage’s research.

Featuring readings by both the poet himself and the surviving relatives of those whose stories he tells, this film offers an opportunity to reflect again on that catastrophic loss of life, and to think about how we commemorate the dead for the next 100 years …”  BBC Two

WORDS OF THE WEEKS – A Hunting We Will go? by Jo Jones

WP_20140201_006

A Hunting we will go?

So there I was, in the horsebox, on my way for another game of chase the bunny.  We were not allowed to chase foxes anymore because the dogs kept eating them before we could catch them. (Although I cannot for the life of me fathom why on earth we would want to catch a fox.) The toffs would all be there, all done up in their pinks, with the usual crowd of baying dogs all getting under our feet.

But when we pulled up and I came out of the horse box, no dogs! Great I thought.  There were hoards of hunt protesters making a hell of a racket; at least I thought they were protesters although they did appear to be rather too well dressed. The toffs were all sporting different colours and silly hats too. Funny, I thought, funny.

Next thing we all start chasing something; heaven knows what, mind.  I couldn’t have been paying attention, probably clocking all the fillies lined up with me. I was so busy eyeing up the talent that I failed to notice that their riders were in fancy dress today. Odd, I thought, odd.

Anyhow, as they were all running I decided to join them.  Hell, where ever we were I had no idea but the farmer who owned this place had not made much of a job on his hedges and ditches. Some of the hedges were massive; a few of the other horses came a heck of a purler.  Hardly surprising!

Still couldn’t see what on earth we were chasing but whatever it was, it was going at one hell of a lick.

Well, the protesters must have been pretty cross about something as they were all shouting and yelling like mad; must have been hundreds of them. Perhaps we were chasing a real fox again. I began hoping that whatever it was would go to earth soon as I was getting knackered.

There must have been some flies on my rear end because my rider kept swatting them with his flyswat thingy. He was beginning to really annoy me with his constant whacking on my backside so I thought I’d put a spurt on and unseat the fellow.

Next thing he is pulling me up, patting my neck, protesters all over me, people taking my photo and wrapping me in some fancy blanket.

Only turns out that I’ve just won something called The Grand National!

NATIONAL POETRY DAY 2nd OCTOBER 2014

national poetry day

This year’s National Poetry Day will take place on Thursday 2 October… TODAY!

The theme for 2014 is ‘remember‘.

Recollect those little things
Each cup with two sugars in,
Mother’s bright red hat and scarf,
Evergreen trees, bumble bees,
Mirror-pictures in the bath.
Bring them to life, they will talk
Even if you think them poor
Riches grow from every thought.

Why don’ you have a go and write your ‘remember’ poem? 🙂

And enjoy this wonderful poetical day!!!

WORDS OF THE WEEK – A Poem dedicated to Dannie Abse – 22/09/1923 – 28/09/2014

Remember  – Old Parrot
Dedicated to the great Dannie Abse (the old parrot) – Poet – died 28/09/2014 aged 91 years old.

Here,
In black ink
My orphic parrot
Speaks once more.

A voice
tremulous –
An echo
To his former

Feathered majesty.
He has taken
That path of
No return

Yet, passing
Among such songs
A waiting
Eurydice smiles.

NEW WORDS ON OLD MEDIA – ANGE GRUNSELL POEM

Ange’s beautiful and evocative prize winning poem published here for the first time.

Digitised Slides (Sonnet)

I look at the screen filled by image: bright

’68, translucent, from dusty slide,

From shabby box, stashed long ago from sight.,

Appearing now so close, though long denied.

Is this now and time itself a fiction?

Surely, then exists in present instant:

Glowing faithful lovers sure in action,

You and me, youthful and free, not distant.

No. This is faraway when, a story

Still unfolded. The babies unborn yet

From the curving stomach; now unsurely

Recollected, though each’s future set.

Retrospectives newly gleam in gloom

Of later life that stole up far too soon.

FREE POP UP POETRY PERFORMANCE IN HAY-ON-WYE!

POP UP POETRY

POP UP POETRY

Griots Arts has another excellent Pop up Poetry event due at 7pm on Wednesday July 30th at Tomatitos Bar, Hay-on-Wye.

Steve Duncan, a leading UK Slam champion is the special guest performer, with others, including Chris Bradshaw also on the bill – no doubt Chris will be evoking something with Emily Bronte in mind as she was born on this day in 1818.

At least one of the Hay Writers (namely myself) will be on stage with a couple of new poems to add to the atmosphere of Tomatitos – Remember, turning up early for a seat is the new fashionably late.  See you there!

Can’t make it but want to get involved??  Why not help Griots Arts via the Go Fund Me site – and make every penny count. http://www.gofundme.com/griots-arts-popuplit
