Christmas Concert at The Globe

IMG_0335[3]

We received the warmest welcome from Mandy Houghton, the Manager of The Globe, and her team during both the initial planning meeting and our Christmas concert held there on 15th December.  We joined forces with The Monday Choir for the second time.

The Globe was attractively decorated:  Christmas lights twinkled, it was warm and cosy.  I love their informal seating; sofas, armchairs and tables, it lends a relaxing atmosphere in which to perform.  The large choir sang ten carols with beautiful arrangements and the eight Hay Writers read their Christmas pieces between the carols.  Reaching the high pulpit was like mountaineering for some – a nearby choir member had to give one writer a gentle shove!  However, it was an excellent place from which to read and survey all around us.

After the choir and audience left, I announced the winners of our 2015 Fiction Competition which had been judged by Piers Wenger of Channel 4.  Our new online coordinator will announce the names of the winners with a flourish – although one of them might embarrass her.

A large group of us stayed for lunch, sitting along a large rectangular table, we all relaxed and delighted in the good sales of our anthology Pick and Mix.  We ate truly delicious food.  Ooh, and the chocolate brownie I ate before our concert was the best I have ever eaten.

A huge thank you to all at The Globe and we hope we will return to your hospitable venue.

Introductions

Church's phone box

Hello!  I’ve taken over from Emma as the Writers’ Circle webmaster.  She’s done amazing things with our website and social media connections and will be a ridiculously hard act to follow – but I have bought a book (which is my answer to every problem).  Please bear with me during the transition, and in the meantime I would just like to introduce myself.

I’m Jan Newton and I live in the mid Wales hills.  I wrote my first novel when I was seven years old, but then ponies took over, and after an extremely lengthy hiatus, I began writing again in 2008, when I embarked on a second Open University degree with their Start Writing Fiction module.  Within three days I was totally hooked.  I completed my BA in 2012 and went on to Swansea University to study for a masters’ degree in Creative Writing, graduating in 2015.

I began by writing short stories and eventually took the plunge, entering my first competition in 2011.  I’ve been fortunate enough to win, amongst others, the Allen Raine Short Story Competition, The Lady Denman Cup and various eisteddfod and magazine prizes, but my experiences at Swansea opened up a whole new world of writing which I hadn’t even considered.  In addition to a fabulous short story module, I studied radio drama, long fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction and nature writing.  In 2014 I won the Oriel Davies Writing Competition with a non-fiction piece, Milltir Sgwar.  Since finishing at Swansea I have written a crime novel and have started a second novel, this time in a slightly more humorous vein.

In April last year I was invited to join the Hay Writers’ Circle and had a baptism of fire, when I was asked to read a short story at the Hay Festival as part of the group’s annual session.  The Writers’ Circle is wonderfully friendly, talented and ambitious and it’s a great pleasure to be able to be a part of it.  In November, our anthology Pick and Mix was launched and I learned both editorial skills and new heights of persistence during its production.  Copies have been selling well and it is still available on Amazon and in various places including Booth’s Bookshop, King of Hay, Oakchurch, The Old Railway Line Garden Centre in Three Cocks and the Tourist Information Centre in Hay.

I would  like to wish all our friends and followers a happy new year, and hope that 2016 will prove to be everything you want it to be.

Blustery Book Updates From A Windswept Hay.

DSCF5165First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who has bought and supported our anthology, ‘Pick and Mix’. It’s been selling like the proverbial hot cakes – not like King Alfred’s scorched offerings, but rather similar to a Mary Berry slow but perfectly risen sponge – very pleasing indeed.

We’ve enjoyed some super articles in the Brecon and Radnor Express and  the Wye Local. Here are some new updates –

Pick and Mix will also be for sale in:
Oakchurch Farm Shop, Staunton-on-Wye, Hereford.
The Old Railway Garden Centre,  Three Cocks.
The King of Hay’s Bookshop, Castle Street, Hay-on-Wye.

If you’d rather hunker down indoors, (quite understandable given the current weather warnings) follow this link to order our book via Amazon.

And finally ….
As all good things must come to an end, so this website-maintaining Hay Writer bids you adieu after two fantastic years of online word-mongering.  Do not worry, I’ll still be a Hay Writer it’s just that in 2016 my poetry will be taking me all over the UK. I’m passing the interweb baton into the extremely capable  hands of Jan Newton – whom I have every confidence will rise from my binary ashes into a very fine phoenix indeed.
Good luck Jan 🙂

Best wishes to all,

Emma van Woerkom – poet

Book Launch Success!

PICK AND MIX

DSCF5171What a great event our book launch was at Richard Booth’s Bookshop last Saturday.

Wine was consumed, books were purchased and the buffet was decimated as though locusts had descended upon Hay-on-Wye – What a glorious night!

PICK AND MIX – SALT ON THE WIND

Well, it’s less than a week till the official book launch of the Pick and Mix anthology and I have to admit to being very excited on several counts.

Firstly, it’s the first true anthology the Hay Writers Circle have ever produced and I have several pieces included. Secondly, the launch is being held at Richard Booth’s Bookshop, which since my early days, before it’s recent transformation, up to the present has always been a Mecca for avid book lovers. It also means I’ll be back home in Hay-on-Wye. Five glorious days of catching up with friends, family and the countryside around where my roots have always been moored.

The anticipation of a book launch …

pick and mix promo photo (2)Pick and Mix anthology update
by Emma van Woerkom

Suddenly, I hear boxes of books are arriving at the Hay Writers’ Circle HQ filled with glorious copies of our Pick and Mix anthology.  We are delighted and excited – book launch date is only one week away!

Ninety-seven pages containing short stories, poetry, prose, fiction and non-fiction wrapped up in eye-popping gloss covers. We are confident our efforts will make this publication literally shine off book shelves and display stands alike.

Book launch preparation is well under way and no doubt 5.30pm on Saturday 14th November will come round very quickly.  A huge thank you to Richard Booth’s Bookshop   who will be hosting our launch party and judging by the amount of interest, we should be selling lots of copies on the night.
