The 2017 winning poem as judged by Christopher Meredith.
Remembrance by Jean O’Donoghue
I’ll slide between them breathing frost
and consternation Mondays and Thursdays
other nights I’ll place grit
within soft folds
One night in six I’ll see
he calls her by my name
and once a month their passion
will be punctured by the phone
“Have you considered double glazing?”
By day, I’ll conjure nightmare –
a voodoo knife among the forks
meat that rots in the fridge
a crow claw on the door step
On summer nights
I’ll join them on the beach
and sing our favourite tune.
In her ear.
After the jellyfish stings them.
I’ll plant a mystery debit on his Visa
for champagne and crab cakes
and on Valentine’s day, a card arrives
that says too much
I’ll find a lethal virus
that combines with
the silicone in her lips
and the botox in her brow
and those augmented breasts
and manufactured finger tips
and overblown exaggerated hips
so
they burst
like ripened flower pods
All at once.
On my birthday.
